The fool should have taken a nice, fast, air-conditioned train to France from Germany and tried to claim asylum. The French media would have probably had a field day.

That said, I've got remarkably little sympathy for him. If you think war is immoral, don't join the ****ing military.
Exult in your existence, because that very process has blundered unwittingly on its own negation. Only a small, local negation, to be sure: only one species, and only a minority of that species; but there lies hope. [...] Stand tall, Bipedal Ape. The shark may outswim you, the cheetah outrun you, the swift outfly you, the capuchin outclimb you, the elephant outpower you, the redwood outlast you. But you have the biggest gifts of all: the gift of understanding the ruthlessly cruel process that gave us all existence [and the] gift of revulsion against its implications.

Not joining an all-volunteer military in the first place if you don't want to be sent off to war at the whim of idiots

Unfortunately, it can be by far the best career move for a lot of people.

And if they make that career move, it has consequences... there is a reason it offers better pay/benifits than floor sweeper at McDonalds.

That's not to say I'm unsympathetic when the government gets us into an unecessary war and these guys are sent over to (possibly) die or be wounded.

Perhaps so. This guy, though, was 35.

You should expect that you don´t spend all of your time in safety @home if you join the army. Especially uf your nation has one or more wars running (even if they´re not called wars )

I have no sympathy at all. I had none when they called up the National Guard and took some of them by surprise. Weekend warriors. Easy bucks is how they thought it would be. Play a better version of paintball. Cool.

Honestly, National Guard I have a bit of a problem with. We shouldn't be sending them out of the country, EVER, unless we're in a war that involves the risk of our country's safety (ie, WWII or 1812, where we're actually being invaded/attacked by an equivalent force). Otherwise they should stay home for homeland security purposes, or things like Katrina.

How many National Guardsmen who could've helped with that evacuation/rebuilding were in Iraq?

Other than that though I agree-- 8 months sentence is way too short, 7 years sounds better to me.

Sounds a lot like Hawkeye (M*A*S*H) ... but Hawkeye did his @#$%#$ duty (and was a conscript). Jerk.

I'd say if you joined the Guard you got screwed pretty royally.
