I'm not sure if the disk would fall or if it's pretty nearly balanced the way I hold it, but I know the shaft wouldn't fall; I'm exerting minimal effort, but I'm definitely holding it down, not pushing it up, with the lower hand.

And a harness is out of the question, I'm afraid. You have to be able to pick it up out of the stand and put it down within rather short periods of time. I certainly wouldn't want to cause a traffic jam behind the altar while trying to unhook the thing.

Then you've already found the minimal force solution for your upper arm (assuming you're constrained to not hold the fan by the fan part itself).

So where I hold my other arm has no bearing whatsoever on the load on my upper arm? I can't tell the difference, it all feels equally like "damn, that's heavy" after about a minute. So I suppose it's a matter of curiosity.

I am astonished by the lack of people *****ing and moaning about stupid useless religious rituals in this thread.

I stopped reading after you admitted to not being Catholic.

It has physics so it only attracts the tip-top of the most highly intelligent people and they feel no need to even broach that topic

No, it does. The closer to the fulcrum your other hand is the more downward force it will apply, meaning that the other arm requires greater upward force.

Just because there are no reported cases of molestation or just because no victims have come forth, does not mean it does not happen.

Okay, MrFun, lemme amend that: we do not have an epidemic of molesting priests, the way the RCC does. Happy?

                      And thanks, KrazyHorse.

Its a simple force and torgue balance but I'll be damned if I can make heads or tails out of the situation without pix or a sketch based upon the description given.

Each arm provides both a force parallel to arm (tension, which I've represented by capital T) and a force perpendicular to arm (multiply this by the length of the arm and you get a torque at the shoulder joint; I've represented these perpendicular forces by small t)

There is also a small amount of torque about each wrist joint, but I've neglected this as being a fairly insignificant source (given small size of muscles moving wrist and the small moment arm it acts through, which is basically given by the size of the palm)

All else being equal, the big Ts will be noticed less than the small ts. For instance, I can lift a 60 lb weight directly upward with each arm (dumbbell shoulder press) but can only raise a 30 lb weight with each arm when holding the weight at arm's length in front of me (dumbbell front raise) even though the active muscle is the same in each case (anterior deltoid).
