perhaps the only thing holding me at the moment is finding a good combination of sftp client and php editing without resorting to dreamweaver

and the winner is Fetch

all the other ftp clients i found (including transmit) had the bad habit of not put the folders first before sorting files (and on Fetch this is actually an added option(!))
