  • Triple-play sucks; alternatives?

I'm getting socked with $140/month+ bills for my phone/internet/cable TV triple-play bundle through RCN, a local cable company ( ). The taxes on the phone and cable TV are outrageous and the market on these services is imperfect, to say the least. So I've been looking to slim down. Any suggestions? Experiences? Gotchas?

I figure that I can get rid of the home phone and just use my cell ($6.75 a month) and VOIP (Gizmo Project?). Anybody have experience with that? Have any bad 911 experiences?

I could get my TV over-the-air. It's free and is in HDTV. It may not be 100% reliable, but I'm willing to give it a go. I don't watch TV much anyway -- mainly just torrents from the net. If I need cable channels like ESPN, I guess I'll use TVU Player, or whatever.

5 mbit down/384k up connection costs $29.95/mo with a one year contract. Plus $3 cable modem rental. Plus modest taxes.

10 mbit down/800k up connection costs $39.95/mo with a one year contract. Plus $3 cable modem rental. Plus modest taxes.

20 mbit down/2 mbit up connection costs $86.95/mo on a monthly contract (they don't have an annual contract). Plus $3 cable modem rental. Plus modest taxes.

Let's say I got the 10 mbit down/800k up connection. That would save me about $90 a month or $1,080 per annum. Real money.

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

To put this in terms that Asher understands, I'm trying to save two PS3s worth per annum.

You probably could hire a couple of full-time servants in India for this kind of dough.

For what it's worth, stop your *****ing.

I pay $210/mo for cable + internet, about $70/mo for phone.

Because my internet is Extreme speed.
Because my digital cable includes every SD and HD channel in the lineup, including about 70 channels dedicated to NHL Centre Ice (every NHL game), NFL Sunday Ticket (every NFL game), MLB Extra Innings (every MLB game), NASCAR In-Car (every NASCAR race), NBA League Pass (every NBA game), OHL Action Pack (many OHL games), and US & College Football (many games). Many of those in HD. Also all of the movie channels, the HD on demand channels, etc.

I guess you should also add another $23/mo for my unlimited DVD/HD DVD/Bluray rentals from zip.ca.

Not sure what I pay for on phone since the wife pays that bill, but my COMCAST bill for broadband and cable is almost 180. This is their deluxe (all channels but playboy) package, digital, HD, and includes a dvr option, with a few extra boxes. It seems high since the internet portion is only 45.

Nah, I consider the Netflix/zip.ca stuff separately. But it's instructive to see that these services are so much cheaper than cable TV.

The 140 includes the HDTV Tier and the PVR. But I can get most of that stuff free OTA.
