It's not just about how hard you think. It's about how smart you think.

    • Yeah, let's bring out more dead people to the picture

Hey, it's really not about science vs. others, we've had this over and over again, and the truth of the matter is, they shouldn't be compared 1:1. Everyone for their own, and there's no one way to succeed. There's lots of ways, lots of backgrounds, it all comes down to who you are yourself and if you can deal with it. We both need each other all the time.

Besides, I do close work with a research people from other fields. It's not exclusive, as in if you are leaning towards something, it doesn't mean you can't do other things or appreciate other things.

Wittgenstein is nothing, Foucault is everything, and he would wipe Wittgenstein with the floor like he did with most of his opponents. You know my mind is truly molded after Klaus Kinski and Michel Foucault anyway. In fact I think I should go and shave my heard right now and pose 'death' faces in front of a mirror.

Please, don't disrespect philosophy with few grand names that are dead and quite frankly boring. There's lots of interesting people in there, or was Wittgenstein one of the 10 philosophers you had to learn about with Nietzsche and few other boring people? Or was it just the history of western philosophy and then OMG there are these eastern philosophy, nice, because I like this anime stuff and it's like nature and samurai poetry.

That's just an excuse for philosophy, there are some really nice ones out there, and you'll sound more believable if you can present something else than what is in your 'philosophy 101' textbook.

          What is to think "properly"?

Economics is a social science. Humans dont think "properly", they might try to but they always more or less fail. We need some systems that take this improper thinking into account. I dont think we can perfect our understanding of economics just by making more complex systems, we need something that is more biological, evolutionary, erratic and robust.

Think it as a shift from mechanical machinery made of steel and wires to living machines made of flesh and neural highways.

(cant think properly anymore, going to sleep)

          • I mean who cares about Descartes?

?? The only thing he'd wipe today is floors with his huge nose. Sure he had some fingers in mathematics as well, but come on. "I think, therefore I am"? What is that ****. So does this mean that things that do not have self image are not as real? That's a very subjective way to know you are, maybe that was the point, but it still doesn't change the fact that he is one ugly and overrated man.

OTOH look at these mad men..

            Kinski

            Foucault

Now these dudes are what it's all about. Ok Kinski is just an actor, but he is still a genius. Foucault is the superior also, but not an actor.

                  • Pekka I have to admit I had never heard of this Focault guy before you mentioned him. So I went to wikipedia to check.

He was a key figure of Twentieth-Century French Philosophy.

                    • laurentius, I never doubted you, but I never really doubted VetLegion either. I just think it's kind of ironic to still see some name dropping that dates back to the ages of non-flushable toilets. Surely they had a great impact, however, the body of knowledge of the collective has transformed into something greater today. I mean, you can't do name dropping with safe bets like "What about Einstein! He knew math and he was smart". What is that supposed to mean? It means nothing, except that Einstein was smart and new some math.

I almost cringe when I hear people starting their sophisticated talks about Plato and the cave thing. Who cares? I could as well bring out Matrix to the table, it has about the same amount of interesting ideas, yet the other one gives you more street credit within the wannabe intelligentsia. It's like 2nd year college students trying to .. in fact that doesn't matter, it's acceptable, since they haven't had the time and chance to think more, but people in their 40s or so, I mean come on!

It's like if we talk about music, I say Beatles and that's it. It's cool that someone likes Beatles, and surely it was a great band, but if that's all you've got, it most likely means you don't listen to music that much. It's a safe bet, besides I hate Beatles anyway. Not with passion, but there's some known grudges.

It's the face value philosophy that I don't like. It's like the ones that say, "I have read Sun Tzu". Ok.. ****.. this guy knows all about combat, warfare, strategy, business, mafia and if he also read Machiavelli, he'll be an individual to be feared! Maybe even a prosecutor!

What's really interesting here is that I know squat about philosophy. I had it one year in high school and I slept in the classes. Furthermore, I don't read filosofy on my own.

But simply from reading a wikipedia article on people, you can see who had loads of sheer brain power and who was a hack with a talent for talking a lot about nothing.

                            • Why did a thread about IQ and huge penis become .. this?

Anyway, if you people want to get all serious about intelligence, it's a bit complex. What these tests usually show is how apt you are with spatial things, structures and basic math. That is all. Doesn't say much really. Doesn't mean anything when it comes to success in your personal life, besides what is success anyway? Happiness, title, money, family, health...

I might score higher than rah in that test, but I know for a fact that outside that test, I wouldn't do as well as rah would right now. I don't have the experience, wisdom and knowledge he has. That's why I value his opinion a lot. I hope to know the things he knows when I'm 100 years old like rah

There's always someone smarter, faster and stronger who thinks I'm an idiot. It's all relative, and we are exaggarating the meaning of it, and what it supposedly indicates. Now, time to sleep.

Those were just some philosophers I though you might be interested to learn more about. Some were taught by Einstein and Planck, some argued with them. Most of those people died only few years ago and because their work is now done it is safe to say whether they had an impact on modern science.

Look some of them up, Jaakko Hintikka probably should be included in that list to. He has done lot of research in Finnish too if its more convenient.
