How did people end up where they are?

IN terms of when people made it first to the new world, the latest genetic evidence seems to indicate the first wave of settlers came around 20,000 BC, and that there were four main waves of people coming over (at least, so said the NOVA I saw last monday).

although I sometimes wonder that about modern times as well.

We stopped at this rinkydink (is that a word?) town in the mountains in California once. And I wondered, who in the hell would want to live here? Sure it's beautiful up here. But it's in the middle of nowhere, nothing to do, and snowed in- in the winter.

As Lord Avalon says...probably gold at one time. Now, there's probably ranching and/or timber...maybe some mining. Possibly growing pot.

And of course there are aliens. It's California, for crying out loud.
