Are Central and Eastern Europe no longer part of Europe?
Last I heard, we had about 10k troops in South Korea to act as a "trip wire."
If NK desides to invade with its million man army, they know that among the first soldiers they kill will be Americans...which means we'll be retaliating hard and fast. It's supposed to be a deterrent.

You are right. I did misread the OP to be Europe = Germany.
In any event, I note that the number of American troops in Europe has gone down substantially over the last several years. Mainly, they went home from Germany.
The forward operating bases in Central/Eastern Europe operate on small crews. Normally less than 5k apiece. I have linked to several news stories on this in the past. Mostly, we are in Central/Eastern Europe because the host countries want us there as insurance against the Russkis and as a small boost to the local economy. For our own part, we are there as insurance against the Russkis and to be closer to where we are fighting right now (M.E. and Afghanistan).Last edited by DanS; February 12, 2007, 11:08.I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

What are 53K US soldiers doing in Europe?
In all likelihood, it's a question of "who," or perhaps "whom," they're doing, not "what." Except for some of the real oddballs.

Isn't the amount of equipment the US has in Europe to equip millions of troops coming in from the US in the event of a shooting war much more interesting?
It's obviously all about the last European great power that does not form part of the Western security architecture. Some might say it's all peaceful nowadays so there's no need to check Russia, but I tell you that's BECAUSE there's 50,000 US troops in Europe and heavy equipment for much more to come in the event of war.

The US is the 4th Reich, don't you listen to the news?
The troops are there for security reasons, the only ones who can beat the 4th Reich is the 5th Reich."The DPRK is still in a state of war with the U.S. It's called a black out." - Che explaining why orbital nightime pictures of NK show few lights. Seriously.

They are also there to maintain the equipment that is mothballed in Germany. In the 70's there was pre-positioned equipment for several divisions, iirc 4, that could be filled out with troops from the US and on line in hmm...36 hours. It's all fuzzy after 30+ years.
Our job in the 2d ACR was to slow the Russians down for 24 hours to give the heavy divisions time to get into position for the really big show. We were to use ambush and localized superiority in firepower in combination with directed airstikes to create confusion and gain time. The 2d ACR was expected to suffer 80% casualties in those 24 hours! The reforger troops from the US were to be the first reinforcements for the main battle, other forces coming by sea would take much longer.Long time member @ Apolyton
