    • Anyone had any experience of leasehold properties? I've been doing research on it (length of lease, lease renewal, marriage values, peppercorn rent etc) but would appreciate any personal experience or insights if you have them.

      • I've always felt deterred by the idea myself. In many ways I would prefer a flat to a house (I hate gardening!) but the whole leasehold business puts me right off...

        • I have a leasehold property - there's nothing to be scared of really. Just make sure you check the rates.

          • Well I threw all caution to the wind, and put in an offer on a very nice place. Three other people put in at asking price and it's only been on the market a couple of days, it's not going to be cheap!

                    I didn't get the first one, or the second, or the third. I've been looking for the last 3 months almost (since the end of January)

                    This is the fourth place I have actually put in an offer for, and it has been accepted subject to certain conditions (like a confirmed mortgage agreement).

It can be frustrating to get stuck in a bidding war and not get the house you originally wanted but in the end you still found a good house to call your own. When I was looking for a house I was home on leave from Iraq and I only had two weeks to find and buy a place. The first house I found needed work but was in a great location and I really liked it but I got stuck in a bidding war. I knew after the first round that I'd lose as they had two incomes and thus more money; I stayed in for the 2nd and 3rd round though just to spike the price and screw the couple because they were snotty to me. I ended up driving the price of their home up $20k before I left. Of course, by then I'd already found the house I currently own and wasn't interested in the other one. I just wanted to screw those bastards who walked in and disrupted my original deal.
