There was little prospect of a deal. The Iranians have rejected broad settlements twice: During the beginning part of Clinton's 2nd term and about a year after 9/11. Mostly, it was due to the internal Iranian situation. It wasn't anything that the US could make right.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Rice told Congress she does not remember seeing the 2003 Iranian proposal, which suggested Iran was ready to discuss its disputed nuclear program, support for militant groups that the United States labels terrorists and the acceptance of Israel.

"We had people who said the Iranians went to talk to you, lots of people who said the Iranians want to talk to you," Rice said during an exchange with Rep. Robert Wexler, D-Florida.

As opposed to not sponsoring them before? Dude, there are terrorist groups operating out of Miami that the government has been helping for years, decades.

I'm not a Democrat. I don't vote Democrat. It's not my party. I'll cry if I want to.

Hamas has never attacked American targets.
Iran last attacked American targets through terrorists in 1996 IIRC.

AQ on the other hand killed 3000 Americans on 9/11.

Obviously one side has shown itself far more likely and willing to attack "the West" (Europe and the US) viciously, with the aim of causing mass civilian casualties. You should be able to guess which.

I think I'm gonna vote for myself. I'm gonna run for Congress in 2008.

I don't know if you read the whole article too, but I don't see any proof that the recently released fax was actually sent in 2003. The only corroborating source in the article that had already left the NSC before the fax was ostensibly received.

Cause I can do that for Iran.

Iran's involvement in Iraq could be argued to constitute exactly that.
They have likely sold the weapons and trained the users, that eventually launched it.

A Hamas related proxy has attacked a US convoy in 2004.

Why does Iran and Iraq spend so much time pissing on each other's boots? Are they the same relion? And isn't all this garbage supposed to be over religion?
They're both majority Shiite Muslim, right?

Lawrence Wilkerson (Powell's Chief of Staff during his tenure at State) has corroborated the story (IIRC, he was the original source). Iran was willing to put everything on the table, and we rejected 'em out of hand. Ahmedinejad is the fruit of Cheney's sabatoge of our diplomatic agenda.

This is one of the many reasons why Bush'll go down in history as one of the most criminally inept occupants of the oval office.
