Can a cellphone with internet be used as a modem?

I'm currently stuck with dialup -- don't ask, just take my word for it -- and I figure anything could be better at this point.

I need details, both on cellular internet in general and possibilities of using it in conjunction with a desktop computer.

Yes, it can be used. For details, see the web page of your carrier. Don't get too hopeful, chances are it won't be faster than dialup and will be much more expensive.

Well, mine can, N6280, I'd imagine any semi-modern can. But it is bloody expensive. Not sure, if the 3G phones are actually faster than dial-up.

You can get DSL speeds, it is more expensive then regular currently in the US I beleive. Generally you will get dialup or 2xdialup speeds.

Yes they are, I got ~128 kbps on my 3g Eric.

i have 230 kpbs on my ppc6700 from spint. Interestingly enough sprint has a service charge for tethering [tethering using your cell as a phone(i have unlimited internet data from my phone for 15 dollars, but they charge for using it as modem for a computer.)] Due to the model of my phone though, they are unable to determine when i am using my phone or tethering it. its pretty sweet.
