My first four rentals were low-rent basement suites during undergrad. You're likely right about the rental boards, though - BC does seem to have pretty good residential tenancy laws.

      MD is awful for renters.

The burden of proof is on renters to show that they did not damage something.

I was in an apartment that hadn't seen new carpets in 20 years, but it was claimed that existing stains had been caused by me. Sorry, I suppose I neglected to take notarised, dated photographs of the damage when I moved in.

My observation is that private individuals consider the deposit as an excuse to undertake personal repairs. And they charge a lot for their time...

Of course, we had to be happy with replacing ****ting carpets for 1000, since we had allowed a roomate to come in which had a poorly trained cat.

I imagine you should check the relevant law. It's exceedingly likely your landlord is lying to you. Florida is by no means a tenant friendly state, but any interest on our security deposit goes to us.

Not in Texas unfortunately, the renter has no claim on the interest.

That's nice in theory but in reality the owners will just raise rents in order to pay for the interest.
