  • McAfee is an inept piece of crap, akin to a sick Dog's poorly digestive product(s)

So I've had some severe computer troubles as of the last half day, which have nearly prompted me to "buy a new harddrive" in trying to salvage important files from a seemingly Worm infested OS.

After barely being able to start up a previously downloaded Kaspersky, a painfully slow (estimated 26 hour) system scan for any possible malicious elements has been running. Barely being able to open up the task manager during, I hoped to close some non-essential programs and speed up the process. Though it seems that several McAfee related programs are still running full speed, after having just "removed" the program via control panel.

When these programs are then closed, the virus scan and general functioning of the entire computer speeds up drastically, dropping from a tentative 26 hour scan completion to under 8 minutes!

It strikes a chord - these problems all started within twenty minutes of having "removed" McAfee last night.

It seems that the attempted removal of the virus scanner / firewall that can't even filter the most basic of threats from viewing .jpg porn has provided the added convenience of PARALYZING MY ****ING COMPUTER.

And if that problem alone is yet fixed, I get to somehow wade through the options of removing a useless, unwanted and seemingly hostage taking anti-virus program from my computer!

Whoops, sorry - I have to go tend to the currently scanning computer, again. The offending McAffee background programs seem to enjoy consistently re-opening themselves after having just been explicitly closed, let alone removed from the harddrive.

      Fantastic!

And now, NONE of the listed methods of removing McAfee seem to be a viable option! I've looked for a non-existent Uninstall. I've tried add/remove. I've tried preceding that with deletion of seemingly write protected files within the "McAfee.com" folder (<- In itself, WTF). I've tried disabling all program start ups, again a crucial one of them is denied

This program IS a virus, and these overrides have nothing to do with added security in keeping McAfee safe from malicious removal, they have to do with added benefit to McAfee in making their program difficult for the average computer user to electingly remove.

Someone deserves to be hurt badly for constructing and/or approving that kind of practise. I'm not ****ing kidding around

I use Avast... it hasn't been bad for me so far. I used to use AVG, but Vista didn't like it (hadn't updated).

Yah, had a similar problem with McAfee (or maybe it was Norton...) on one of my Dad's laptops. You can try:

I'd also recommend downloading CCleaner and removing any references to McAfee on startup (Tools->Startup). Or you can use msconfig to do the same thing, but CCleaner is helpful in a lot of other ways too. Like, checking the registry for errors (Issues), where there are probably plenty of other McAfee references still around.

Once you get rid of all the references you can, boot in safe mode (F8 after the bios screen, before Windows starts to load), and hopefully you can delete any of the McAfee files still in Program Files.

I like AVG, ZoneAlarm, and HijackThis. CCleaner isn't so much a security tool, but it does help root out "legal" infections that pass for some commercial software.

I've ZoneAlarm has gone downhill in the latest iterations. Can anyone verify? I'm, for the moment, using Windows Vista Firewall, but looking to upgrade as soon as possible.

One February, I bought a computer that came with 1 year of free McAfee. In May, McAfee demanded that I renew my subscription. I contacted them repeatedly, pointing out that Feb-May is not one year. They never responded to any of my attempts to contact them.

I shall never deal with them again.

Under the Add/Remove Programs menu, there should be a McAfee Uninstaller.

But I think McAfee is much much worse than Symantec.
