I find the categorization of art into such niche labels tedious at best, but if you are saying that seeing beauty in the alteration of this piece is a view of "modern art", I think you are mistaken. It seems to me that this outrage isn't a result of the dragon being destroyed, but the reverance / respect of an artist (a sort of 'national treasure') being tarnished.
