  • ISTR KH figured you out pretty well:

    I understand, GePap.

Whenever what you implied is demonstrated to be wrong, then you did not imply it.

As I said, the last post I wrote said it all. Maybe you should have read the BBC article too.

      • I'll summarize the last post: "I blundered into this discussion with no clue what the **** I was talking about. Since my arguments have been thoroughly destroyed by people with a clue, I'll retreat to the safety of questions to which no one can prove answers."

Excuse me for pointing out that 'atheism' does not share the attributes of organised religion.

What is the holy book or what are the scriptures where the revealed and only truths of atheism reside ?

Who are the priests, priestesses or popes of atheism ? How is the discipline of the supposed 'atheist religion' enforced ?

What tithes do atheists have to pay ?

What are the sites of pilgrimage for atheism, which mythical figures founded atheism, who polices the collective wisdom of atheism ?

'Atheism' is simply not accepting as true the 'arguments' for the supposed existence of a god or gods, that is, supernatural creators or divinities held responsible by some people for the creation of the universe.

I see your ability to summerize things is as weak as your ability to form an arguement.

              Pity.

              • What a long thread. No time to reply to everything, so I'll talk about what this thread was originally about. Both the interviewer and the interviewee on that show were obnoxious. Sunday school as psychological torture is such hyperbole, although certainly I'll allow that intense, concentrated and fanatical theological programs can do great harm. But I went to sunday school for years and wound up a theist, with varying beliefs (or rather, hopes and wishes for the way the world works), and despite the fact that I didn't turn out perhaps the ideal way, I don't feel at all damaged by the time I spent there.

                • Let's say that a person is gay, and their religion teaches that they will go to hell.
That might be psychological torture for the person

                    • I'm sure Sunday School is torture for some. Personally I rather liked it.

Now, what I want to know is why it's so important to CyberShy to believe that atheism is a religion.
Why can't you be a non-conformist just like everybody else?

                      • I went to a very harmless Sunday School that had no lasting theological influence - other than my ability to still recite all the books of the bible. All we did was sing songs and discuss how to be nice to people.

I don't ever remember us discussing homosexuality in sunday school.
