well obviously they give off heat, in the same way someone sparking up a *** gives off heat. i.e. nowhere near enough to have a meaningful effect on my lounge's temperature.

Studies prove you wrong. Try getting a few lamps - it's more efficient than central heating, especially if you like it bright.

Both of you are both right and wrong. It is right that incandescent bulbs give off heat, which is why fluorescents are more energy efficient.

That's too say, they're energy efficient when you don't need the heat. In winter, all the energy "lost" as heat from the lightbulbs is regained as less energy needed for your heating units.

And "energy-saving lightbulbs" are ridicvulously over-rated. The "energy" they save is actually heat. There have been studies that show the heat from a normal lightbulb reduces the expenditure needed on central heating, and since central heating heats rooms you don't use and normal lightbulbs light (and heat) only the rooms you do, they truly are the efficient version.
                        What studies?

Are any studies needed? I'd thought it obvious that if there's an additional heat source in the room, the normal heating element needs to output less heat.

The study would be required to prove this part of the statement:

normal lightbulbs light (and heat) only the rooms you do, they truly are the efficient version
We know that normal lightbulbs produce heat. The question is do they produce that heat more efficiently than a central heating system (oil furnace, for instance). Is their additional power consumption (over CFLs) cancelled out by their heat generation? I'm dubious.

While I hesitate to agree with Doddler, I know that my chandelier (with NINE incandescants) gives off significant heat. Its above my front door and just about level with my 2nd-level rec room. The heat is such that it can make it uncomfortably warm

@Arrian: Ah. That would depend on the details specific installations. I would expect the difference to be small in most cases.
