Ohioans May Soon Face Draft -- For Poll Workers

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio could become the first state to draft poll workers.

Ohio's secretary of state is considering such a plan to supplement an aging work force and shorten the job's long hours.

That's according to Jennifer Brunner's spokesman, who said she plans to ask the Ohio Legislature to authorize the proposal.

Under the plan, prospective poll workers would be notified by mail that they would be needed for two days of training and would be required to work an eight-hour election day.

Poll workers are currently paid up to $95 a day. Details about whether the drafted poll workers would receive the same pay or whether there will be penalties for refusing service are still being worked out.

I hope people on the electoral role as postal voters don't have to work as poll attendants...

If they made it $95 in addition to any government salary, there'd be government employees signing up by the truckload. That's what we have here in Calif.

                    Jennifer Brunner - Democrat elect.

"As Secretary of State, Brunner will work toward election reforms that will open up the polls to greater legal scrutiny, ensuring fair elections. She also plans to create incentives, to involve more individuals as poll workers and ensure that no individual need wait in unnecessarily long lines simply to cast a ballot."

Heck of an incentive, a draft.

Hell, I was born and raised in Ohio (Akron/Canton region if anyone is interested).

On that note .... Why would anyone question the reason for my move to California! (being gay is just a plus I should add).

Smacks of slavery to me. he Government does not have the right to usurp the labor of US workers except in a national emergency as declared by Congress. The original military draft set off riots in New York City in the Civil War. Now the Governor of Ohio thinks that Ohio citizens can be drafted in a good cause. Time to regain control folks.
