I liked the Steely Dan songs I heard on the radio back in the day, but I never actually bought anything till recently. Funny thing, I've only listened to these a few times, yet this past week I've had some of their songs running through my head (but not in an arrrrggghh-make-it-stop way - I didn't mind it). Tatum's contemporaries recognized his prowess, however. When he walked into a club where Fats Waller was playing, Waller stepped away from the piano bench to make way for Tatum, announcing, "I only play the piano, but tonight God is in the house". In addition, Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff, after hearing Tatum play, claimed he was the greatest piano player in any style. I wasn't knowing who was Art Tatum. But I just listened to some preview of Art Tatum song on emusic.com. I've add his "greatest hits album" on my "Save for later" download list.
