My top ten so far (and I have yet to see Pan's Labyrinth):

    1. Children of Men
    2. The Fountain
    3. The Prestige
    4. The Science of Sleep
    5. Babel
    6. Casino Royale
    7. A Scanner Darkly
    8. The Departed
    9. Volver
    10. Marie Antoinette

Admittedly, Marie Antoinette had some problems, but I felt there was enough good to outweigh the bad - enough to merit a place on the top ten.

I wouldn't call Babel a mainstream film judged by your own definition, Bkeela.

I also enjoyed "Little miss Sunshine" and Almodovars new film, "To Return" I think is the english title.

At first I couldn't remember going to the movies more than twice. However looking at the list of top grossing movies in the US I can also note "X-men 3", "Pirates of... 2" and "The Da Vinci Code". Neither meant much or anything to me.

Sometimes I do wonder how some screen writers got their job when I feel I myself could have written a better story and dialoge if had a chance to re-work the same material - and I have no writing ambitions whatsoever.

Perhaps it has something to do with age (and wisdom ), older mainstream blockbuster seemed better when you and I didn't know better?

There's a pretty huge film festival here in town at the moment. At first I didn't plan to go. But then found out that they are showing a music documentary about one of the best rock bands of the 1960s; The Monks. so now I'm going to that one as well as another documentary a spanish film about Don Quiote and some film from the Balkans.

Hollywood getting worse? Well, other scenes are getting better at the same time.

But still, there's good movies coming out of Hollywood in my opinion...

little miss sunshine was perhaps my favourite film of the year.

I didn't like Babel, I think it was an attempt to make a bit artsy film Crash/Traffic style but it just wasn't good in my opinion. Entertaining, yes, but actually good? You know, not thought provoking at all IMO.

Children of Men I did like, I also did like Blood Diamond. And The Departed was pretty good as well.

So yeah, I think there were pretty good movies this year as well, and the scene outside Hollywood is getting more and more good stuff out so I'd say good things are happening rather than the opposite.

I'm certainly not stressed about the quality of movies. In fact, I like this year's crop better than 2005.

Movies today are in general no worse or better than movies in the past. Maybe the fact that bad movies from the past don't survive gives us a poor sample set. Just watch Mystery Science Theater 3000 to see that at least in the horror or sci fi genres quality has been overall consistently bad.

I feel that sci-fi movies are crap lately. Casino Royale or Babel are good movies - but the sci-fi derpatment has disappointed me in the last several years. For all of my love of sci-fi, I didn't particularly care for the Matrix - I think the first one was an okay movie, the second and the third are very meh. Where are the good sci-fi movies now? Children of Men is somewhat sci-fi, at least, that's good.

Children of Men had a very interesting noir story, about an interesting, easy to relate to man getting caught up in circumstances outside of his control. Interesting characters, beautiful cinematography, suspense, gritty realism. It had thought. The visual direction was impeccable, with great visual control in multiple planes of action.

What, precisely, was crap about it?

It was boring, no twists, just a chase.

That's some pretty lame criticism. How was it boring? I don't see how you can argue there were no twists when the film repeatedly seems to be going in one direction, and then turns, for example with what happens to Julianne Moore's character. And then what happens with unexpected betrayals. I'm trying to be vague so I don't spoil the plot for anyone, but do you see my point? The film is hardly just a chase: for one thing not only are there some meditative interludes (the abandoned school?) but the chase proper incorporates into itself thought and interest. For example when they're taking the bus and the police officers come on board, near the end.
