  • Movies Have Become Garbage

I'm certain that the quality of movies has dropped to a near unwatchable level, but you wouldn't know it looking at the ratings such films receive on IMDb.

I understand that mainstream films are nothing but products designed to sell tickets, but in the past, such films also managed to be entertaining. Much of the popcorn fodder produced in the 80's and 90's was great - even my dad loved Raiders of the Lost Ark. But today, mainstream movies are an absolute bore. I just know that the likes of Casino Royal, Deja Vu, Dreamgirls or The Pursuit Of Happyness will have me looking at my watch more than the screen.

Not even more accomplished directors are producing the goods. Darren Aronofsky's The Fountain is crippled by an almost total lack of narrative, and a convoluted, three threaded plot. Babel, by Alejandro González Iñárritu, is equally burdened with a mishmash of components that pretentiously come together in the end.

The Oscars will be too embarrassing to watch when the likes of The Queen, which should have been a BBC drama at best, is in the running for best film.

Hollywood has either run out of good writers, or good writers have been dropped in favour of hacks and endless remakes.

People act as if there was no such thing as a bad movie before 1990.

Babel is an excellent movie, and I wasn't tempted to look at my watch at any single time during the move

Little Miss Sunshine is the best movie I saw last year, Steve Carell is great in it.

I really think lost in translation is one of the best movies of the decade

Ive been thinking of going to the movies these past 2 weeks, but all movies seem to have mixed reviews, including babel, no movie that most reviewers like

Pans labyrinth is the best I ve seen in 2007

It's probably partially because I used to work in a cinema, but I just can't be arsed to get out for movies more. Partially the "experience" (rude people, rip-off concessions, etc.) but also nothing seems to excite me much, or looks like what Bkeela mentinoed above - something that would have been just as good as a TV film or mini-series. Half the time I'd just rather pick up an old favorite or some smaller film that got squished under all the mega-blockbusters.

Not that I hate the *big* summer/christmas movies, I was interested in both Apocalypto and Casino Royale this year, but didn't get around to either (though in CR's case that was more from illness). Those both are going to suffer a bit on my definetly not high tech home setup but hey, I can watch'em in my PJ's if I dang well please

Maybe we're better informed viewers, and just won't settle for crap if you practially could buy the DVD for the price of night-time admission?
But there's no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

really true Bkeela... It was a very sad year for mainstream movie; The Illusionist) was not so bad, Babel was good(but it is not so mainstream)

Oh yeah and I heard really good review of Pan's Labyrinth!!

One of the best movie I watched this year, was a small, made in Quebec, movie called; La Neuvaine (Novena).

Children of Men? The Prestige? Volver? The Fountain? Casino Royale? Babel? I haven't seen Pan's Labyrinth but I'm looking forward to that as well.

I'm certainly not stressed about the quality of movies. In fact, I like this year's crop better than 2005.

If I had the choice between rewatching Casino Royale or Raiders of the Lost Ark, I'd be quite hard pressed to choose.
