Why get your character married when its not even in the game? its just something you make up in a guild? Dont you think these people lack something of high importance in terms of feeling and social adaptability?

What will happen in 20 years when games are a fully 3D environment and all you wear to play is a suit? Why play Sims when you can live a life of your own?

They say video games create events like Columbine...I beg to differ. The kind of people that have ''parties'' and get married in WoW create events like Columbine.

Why do you talk politics here with total strangers in some Internet forum? Why not get people together in the real world and discuss important issues of the day? What are you, some kind of freak?

I think the line between "reality" and "virtual" will continue to blur as we go forward. Increasingly the Internet is not an escape from the real world, but is becoming the real world. Online dating, online shopping, flikr, MySpace, etc are becoming more and more common. This isn't something scary, but something empowering. We can do so much more online, and easier. People can quit their jobs and support themselves with income from playing MMOs. I can think of worse ways to pay rent.

Ask someone from a few hundred years ago what they think of modern society and they may have a similar reaction. We live in filing cabinet buildings in vast cities disconnected from the earth and each other. Metropolises of steel and stone are very unnatural places to live. Going years without ever feeling the grass between your toes or a stream flow around your ankles would seem unnatural and unhealthy to most of our ancestors. But for better or worse that is progress.

Is typing /dance at a WoW party lame and pathetic? Of course it is. But going out to a party with total strangers and drinking so much you pass out in your own vomit is pretty lame and pathetic in my book too. I don't see why one is seen as cool and the other isn't. At least the WoW nerds aren't driving into trees on their way home from their "party".

Do online people miss out on the benefits of genuine face-to-face human interaction? Yes. But there are way too many people out there who live entirely in the real world who go months without any meaningful human interaction. Living lonely, shallow, false lives is all too common for the real world. Giving these people a chance to connect with another human, even with the Internet or a nerdy MMO as an intermediary is nothing but a good thing.

Seriously, I mentioned that already...''There is MSN'' is what I intended. Clearly, you can figure out the difference between a forum/MSN and WoW. Also, I dont plan on marrying you just for show, as our logins are who we truly are...or so I believe. I dont consider Poly to be a fantasy world. Do not compare WoW and Poly, thats like apples and oranges, both fruits but not the same.

Please, if thats the way parties usually went, why would we even have parties. Also, going to parties where you know no one is the 1st reason to go to a party. Meet new people, most likely a girl that you can connect to and do something with, you know, in real life, for real, like eating real food and maybe grab a kiss or 2, you know, a real kiss...So there is no way you can compare a real life party with WoW. And if someone passes out, I will be the first one to wedgie the noob and laugh at him. No way that can happen in WoW.

Nothing but a good thing? Are you serious?! People that isolate them selfs and only find comfort in things like WoW is really not healthy imo. It only increases their isolation as years go on because living in WoW is easier than facing real life.

What is this world coming to? Theres even a site where it talks about the socio-economical life in WoW...Did you know that the average age of a WoW player is 28.3 years old? Can you guys believe that? My sister used to marry her Barbie dolls when she was 7 years old...

I had a 30-year-old roommate who was hooked on WoW. I have never played the game but from observing my environment I've gathered that it is something to avoid

I've never played it either. But I've played a few free trials of other MMOs and the novelty wears of quick for me. They all seem to ultimately devolve to doing random, repetitive tasks to try and make money in the game. Which seems to be pretty much the same as working, but less fun. Not something I'd want to spend 6 hours of my free time doing.

But for those who get really into it, I can see the appeal.

I just never got the appeal of mmorpg's.

Perhaps if I was younger when they came out I would get into them. But I feel like my life is going the opposite way. Instead of delving deeper and deeper into the online world, I'm finally starting to make friends and go out and do stuff. I never did any of this stuff when I was younger. Yeah I did stuff in the navy, but there were no females involved. Just a bunch of guys drinking. Lame.

You're just finding out about MMORPG "marriages"? UO came out in 1997 and the first wedding there was probably a week or so later. (Probably right after they got the horrible lag problems worked out... was kinda hard to do anything the first few days.)

They're far more likely to have a herd of malnurished cats than any sort of weapon. So unless you're a cat, or going to be entering their apartment covered in tunafish... you're probably safe.
