  • IPCC 4th Review - Process is a Farce

The "Summary for Policy Makers" will be published next week. The "science" section will follow three months later, once it has been adjusted to agree with the Summary for PMs, and only then can the data and analysed be scrutinised by independent bodies. Auditors, if you like. The process is a farce.

It is expected that the approved text of the Summary for Policymakers will be released at a press conference in Paris on February 2, 2007, and that it will also be available on this web site from that date.

Prior to its final approval on February 2, the content of the report is embargoed in order to allow the final stages of review and revision to be carried out in a balanced way. Speculation as to the content of the report has been inaccurate and unhelpful. All those interested in this new assessment of climate science are asked to accept the need to wait for the report to be completed according to normal IPCC procedures.

The full Working Group I report will be available online from May 2007. It will also be published by Cambridge University Press and is expected to be available in book form by late June 2007.

This seems completely backwards to me. The technical and scientific evidence should be released first, not the summary for the politicians.

        Just see the comments here:

I was mulling over the IPCC release schedule, which has a procedure that is, shall we say, unprecedented in my experience with public disclosure documents. The schedule has been available for some …

You should know that politicians can't deal with anything technical or scientific. It just makes their feeble brains melt.

This isn't science though - it's environmental politics from the wannabe-scientists climate change children of the 70s couched in attempted science.

I'm not really disagreeing with the spirit of your post Stew. The thing I notice is that these 'green politics' are a great moneyspinner for the government. By using fear of global warming, they have created an opportunity to impose punitive taxes on the population without actually providing a feasible alternative. If the government were so positive about green issues, why not stop the ridiculous hikes in rail fares (well above the rate of inflation once more), why not an integrated transport policy that addresses these points? The issue is that motoring is getting cheaper than using public transport! And bullyboy tactics aren't going to work alone without offering some incentives!

I think that ultimately will be the reason AGW gets exposed as a fraud - people will not want to payu the taxes (we're already paying higher fuel bills by the way). Then the amateurishness of the science and the mastery of PR will be shown.
