                    LIGHTING UP CENTRAL AFRICA

In such places like Kampala and Libreville, the notion of a Jewish holiday is barely known. These small but significant Jewish communities experience the true definition of Jewish isolation. This year Chabad of Central Africa, under the directorship of Rabbi Shlomo Bentolila, the shliach in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, organized Chanukah activities in ten African countries. The program, sponsored by the United Jewish Communities of Central Africa, sent four pairs of yeshiva students and one couple to ten African countries - Congo Republic (Pointe Noire), Ethiopia (addis Ababa), Gabon (Libreville), Ghana (Accra), Kenya (Nairobi), Namibia (Windhoek), Nigeria (Abuja and Lagos), Rwanda (Kigali), Uganda (Kampala), and Zamibia (Lusaka).

The Chabad groups brought the light and spirit of Chanukah to some of the darkest and most remote corners of the world. In each city the Chabad representatives organized a Chanukah celebration, giving many Jews an opportunity of Jewish connection they would not have had. Children’s Parties and adult Chagigot were held, as well as Chanukah ceremonies in many Israeli embassies. In countries where whites are outnumbered by an average ratio of a few thousand to one, seeing another Jew, is a most welcome sight. One can only imagine the great joy the Rabbis brought to the Jewish inhabitants when they arrived.

Rabbi & Mrs. Mendel and Esther Miriam Lif****z landed in Nairobi, Kenya, only hours after a double terrorist attack in the coastal Kenyan city of Mombassa. Due to the circumstances all the original plans were altered. The Chanukah celebration in Mombassa, which the couple had organized and was scheduled for Monday evening at the Mombassa Paradise Hotel, had to be cancelled, as it had been destroyed by the bomb and all the Israeli tourists were evacuated by the Israeli military. In Nairobi, due to security concerns, a celebration for adults and a children’s party were combined into one and held at a private home instead of two celebrations at the Nairobi Hebrew Congregation synagogue. The celebration was a huge success as over two hundred people came to celebrate and unite. The children enjoyed the crafts, entertainment, and treats brought from New York and the event was filled with an atmosphere of pride and the Chanukah spirit. "We were thinking of canceling the event," said Mrs. Judy Moran, a community activist. "But the Chabad representatives were resolute that we must celebrate Chanukah and stand united. We are so thankful for that. Look at this beautiful party! We really thank them for coming."

In Nigeria, Rabbis Chananya Rogalsky and Mendel Zirkind, brought the Chanukah atmosphere to Jewish residents. In its capital, Abuja, a Chanukah gathering was held at the home of the Canadian Ambassador while in Lagos children assembled at a local business to celebrate the holiday.

From there they continued to Ghana, conducting Chanukah and Shabbos services in several venues.

Meanwhile Rabbis Dovber Wolvovsky and Shmuel Lif****z brought Chanukah sand-art and other crafts for the Jewish children in Windhoek, Namibia. In Zambia they gathered men, women and children together to sing, dance and rejoice in the Chanukah spirit.

Francophone Africa was no less involved in observing the festival. In Gabon, Rabbis Mendel Goldberg and Mendel Narboni conducted a Chanukah celebration at a hotel, which was attended by the French-speaking and Israeli community. They continued to Pointe Noire, where the tiny Jewish community was overjoyed to receive them and commemorate the Chanukah story.

The Israeli Embassy in Addis Ababa thanked Rabbi Bentolila for sending Rabbis Tzvi Hertzel and Elisha Rogalsky for Chanukah (and Shabbos) noting that they undoubtedly contributed to the Chanukah atmosphere. From Ethiopia the Rabbis continued to Uganda and Rwanda. Each of these small Jewish communities were amazed at the efforts of Chabad and eagerly participated in the Chanukah events.

As Jews celebrate the miraculous victory of the few over the many, the Jews in Africa celebrate the arrival of Shluchim to lands where Jews may feel as the few amongst many. They have only one request: Please come again soon.

Look, I know the Palestinians have been engaging in terrorism for decades now, but have they really done anything horrible enough to warrant such a punishment as being forced to live in Wales? Even if you remove all the Welsh beforehand, that's pretty harsh, dude.

The smell of people cooking in nearby England alone would be cruel and unusual beyond all reason. No matter how many busloads of kids they blew up, punishing them by making them all smell English cooking is a disproportionate response, and probably a violation of the Geneva conventions.
