  • Google does it again?

I guess we'll see in about 10 days, when Google announces its 4Q and full year '06 earnings. But in the meantime, there are rumblings of huge Google capital expenditures in rural America. Big time.

This week, Google announced a $600 million Lenoir, North Carolina (i.e., East BFE North Carolina) data center (backed up by $100 million in NC state tax incentives). I can guarantee that this is more money than Lenoir has ever seen in one place. Cringley has reason to believe that other, similarly-provisioned data centers are on the way.

    Re the NC data center...

Cringley's info on South Carolina and Georgia data centers and his take on it all...

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

    Here's to great minds

By way of background, in 3Q, Google spent $492 million on capital items (land, data centers, etc.). This puts it in the realm of the telephone and cable companies. Cringley is thinking along the right lines.

        This is getting scary.

Why scary? I'm sure the good folks of Lenoir are happy to see Google do business there.

Perhaps late night comedians will use this as a chance to use "google" in vulgar ways again!

US telecoms are professional, government sanctioned rip-off artists; if GOOG decides to create a wireless alternative, I'm all for it.

Here's a Google v. Telcos article from Gigaom...

Google's going after world domination. Well, it could be worse.

One of the saving graces of the telcos is that they have achieved regional domination, whereas Google is after world domination.

Good article by Cringley. Makes a lot of sense. I've observed my internet usage pattern to go towards using up more and more bandwidth because of YouTube and such, and I assume it must be similar elsewhere.

If the telcos decide to erect toll bridges on the internet, I'm sure the net companies will want to create their own networks. It could be the catalyst for the next tech boom.

Cable companies shouldn't be let out of equation, too.

The democratic Congress is certainly hostile to the telcos and friendly to the net companies. AT&T didn't even bother to give money to dems during the last election.

Google! Build some of those around here. There's a new hydroelectric plant going up down in Union County.
