That's a reason to keep HBO after Deadwood, Rome , and Sopranos ends this year.
This is best possible way that the Song of Ice and Fire comes to the screen. The books have way too much stuff to condense them into a 3 hour movie. 12, 1 hour episodes per book will allow for a great treatment of the books. And Martin is intimately involved in the project, so it won't go off into 'crazy plot changes land' (though there is speculation that the kids in the story would be bumped up in age a few years than they are in the books). And HBO has the money to give the books the treatment they deserve.
Of course - it also means he'll be hanging around on movie sets instead of writing more books.
"Stuie has the right idea" - Japher
"I trust Stuie and all involved." - SlowwHand
"Stuie is right...." - Guynemer
Btw, what Kuci and Jon were talking about (gritty writing, somewhat likable characters [Eddard, Jon Snow, etc] being treated badly, etc) is the reason we like the books (well, personally, that and the fact while there is magic, its a far smaller and less powerful thing than in other fantasy novels).
Martin basically pulls no punches. There isn't a good guys always luck out in the end type of stuff. It's hard stuff, warring and being a hero.
I also like the fact that in mid series, Martin shows us the viewpoint of the 'villians' of the series:
Spoiler:
fwiw, I think Jamie comes out very well, while Cersei is still a ***** who gets what she deserves.
giving us another side to the conflict.
Think of it this way, it'd be like in Lord of the Rings if the Fellowship was far less "good" (as in they were like actual people with their goals and motives) and half of them died along the way. And somewhere in the Two Towers we see how things are from Sauron's and Saruman's point of view, and one of them may be very symphathetic of a character (well, as much as one can be in Martin's SoIaF).

If you read his blog, you'll note that he's been hanging around doing other stuff instead of writing more SoIF books.
Though I like this better than him doing other projects. Mostly because it'll keep his mind on the series. And it may be a great way to confirm facts of the previous books so that there aren't any plot continuity problems in future books (ie, instead of doing something with Wildcards which has no bearing on SoIF, he'll be doing something that allows him an easier and quicker background check when he goes to write Book 6 and 7... I think the series will come out after Book 5 [I hope!!]).

Jamie is changing, I think. Having characters that develope is a good thing.

Ooh - and since it's HBO Dany doesn't have to keep her clothes on!
Yep .
And yes, Jon, I think Dany, Jon, Robb, etc, will all increase at least a few years in age for the show. Martin always regretted that he made them so young in A Game of Thrones. Here is a chance to rectify it without messing the story up.

I'm really not so sure Jaime is a villain.... he might of done some... bad things, but he has made up for them, or is trying to anyway.

The two that the age really is in issue with is Brian and the youngest (I am forgetting his name right now, starts with an R) although it is a real issue for Aria (sp?) also.
The ones you named have no real issue with age, during the middle ages people did things young, and it fits with Song of Ice and Fire also.

Yes he was... especially in the 1st book (ask Bran).

Rickon.
Well, and the issue with age is in finding good actors to play the roles. There are more actors out there who barely over 18 than those who are under 18 (due to school stuff, etc). Also 18 year old Dany means nudity .
