Quebec renews calls for climate change funding
Associated Press
Montreal — The Quebec government renewed its calls Saturday for federal money to fight climate change after reports emerged that the province will have difficulty meeting its Kyoto targets.
Environment Minister Claude Bechard called on Ottawa to hand over the $328 million the province says it needs to cut greenhouse gas emissions.
Montreal Le Devoir reported in its Saturday edition that Quebec is on pace to reduce its emissions by only 10 megatons by 2012, four megatons fewer than targets outlined in the Kyoto Protocol.
"We could make good headway," Mr. Bechard said. "But because the environment is a shared responsibility and Canada is a signatory to the Kyoto Protocol, it has always been clear that completely meeting the targets of the accord required federal financial participation."
Mr. Bechard is slated to meet with his newly-minted federal counterpart, John Baird, in the coming weeks.
