Look, most people who get cancer either smoke or do some other activity that massively increases their risk. It's their own fault.
    Like what, go to work?

Do you know how many jobs involve daily contact with carcinogens? Most of this is due to corporate negligence and insufficient safety precautions.

      Second hand smoke.

You Einsteins. Not just smokers get cancer. Get a grip.
Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away.

It is far and away the #1 culprit.

Look, people, in India, Rs. 1,50,000 is a lot of money, whereas Rs. 40 is not. For us, it's a gigantic cost reduction. Even when you take surgery into account, this still more than halves the costs. You people may be living in some socialist utopia by robbing the rich and productive, but we here can't afford that.

As KH said, 150,000 isn't the material cost, it's the material cost + cost of the license. This material will cost a lot more than Rs. 40 once you add licensing fees.

                QFT!

If you stop breathing you massively reduce your risk of developing (any sort of) cancer in the future.

No. When the cost of the component whose cost is decreased is a minor part of the overall cost, then the the overall cost is not seriously affected.

If sterile gloves become 10 times cheaper does that mean we'll se a major shift in the cost of surgical procedures?

                  Translation: you don't know.

I know a lot better than you do.

Not having to do a second operation on a cancer patient is "nice, but not essential"?

Yes. These are not overly invasive procedures.

A through C are dismissed and your whole post was an overstatement. Stick to physics kid.

Stick to whatever it is that you do, kid. You're just another gullible layman.

So far what I've gleaned from this thread:

                      1) Indian science sucks
                      2) Indian science reporting sucks. Not a surprise. Science reporting everywhere sucks.
                      3) People are gullible.

I'm going to make a bet with anybody who wants to take me up that this will not lead to any "fantastic" improvement in cancer treatment in the next 10 years (measured either in survivability or affordability of overall treatment).

                        Takers?

Note how everybody with any real science training here is skeptical about the importance of this development.

                          That might tell you something.

Depends on how you define "fantastic". If I was being treated, any savings in cost would be "fantastic" to me in the common-use sense of the word. Even if we assume cost won't be changed at all though, I would also consider it "fantastic" to not have to have a second proceedure to remove the gel, regardless of how non-invasive that proceedure would be...

Hell... "fantastic" with the right emphasis could mean exactly what you're saying KH. Just roll your eyes a little...

It may prove to be a significant (but not revolutionary) improvement to a treatment which is itself only applicable in a limited number of cancer cases.

                              Is it worthwhile work? Sure.

Is it worthy of the term "fantastic breakthrough"? No.

Media, huh? Ha! I'll have to keep that in mind at the next news conference with breathless officialdom of various professions, front and center hyperventilating about what a Big Deal so and so breakthrough is.
