Martial arts stick sets off evacuation at Concordia campus

Montreal — A martial arts stick and a camouflage shirt set off an evacuation and a major police response at the suburban campus of Montreal's Concordia University.

Police say the long stick was found in a student's locker after officers viewed a video surveillance tape of the student wearing a camouflage shirt and putting an object into his locker.

Spokesman Laurent Gingras says police forced open the locker and found the stick, adding the student won't be charged and police have offered to pay for a new lock after breaking open his locker.

A university employee called police this morning with a report of a man wearing camouflage and possibly carrying a weapons case.

About 50 police cruisers and the force's tactical squad responded to the call and traffic was blocked off in the area.

University classes are to resume at 4 p.m. today.
