I think people underestimate the importance of email.
It's actually the thing I do least on the internet. I often go days without checking my email. .
Things I do on the internet daily are news and apolyton (unless I'm busy). I also check the wiki home page. I love the interesting tidbits they have, and what happened on so and so day.
My last vacation was almost completely arranged over the internet. I headed up to Oregon to see Lancer (whom I met on the internet). I planned the route using Mapquest and found & booked hotels using search engines.

I'm pretty hooked when I have time and unlimited access (and I used to be an addict), but I can un-hook fairly easily when I just can't access it.

Yeah, it's easy not to use the internet when you don't have an access to it.
In da butt.

The first text based browsers wasn't exactly fun, but it certainly was a whole new way to get info.
I can clearly remember the first time I installed the Mosaic browser back in 93/94 and visited a site at a hawaian university - not only plain info but also pics although it took a hell of a time to get those pics.
Today, well, I won't call it a luxury - it's a big part of my work, lots of my communication with public service goes that way (tax, insurance, bank etc), and then there are all the nonpublic things - buying cars, other stuffs, friendmaking, pron etc.
If the internet got so seriously infected that it couldn't be restored, it would be a pain in the ass.
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

Well, it does get worse. The amount of information improves, of course, most other stuff doesn't. Website design was better in the era of 28.8K modems when 56K was really fast - few, if any, pics, clearly visible text, etc. Now you have too many bloated sites with tons of links, pictures, frames, whatever. Gahh. Of course, email was also more pleasant even 6 years ago, not spammy as it is now...
