No, but being obese only affects your health. Being a smoker affects the health of everyone around them. I agree with large taxes on fatty foods in order to provide a disincentive for their use and pay for the extra medical treatment needed for obese people, however I accept it's up to a person what they consume, since it doesn't directly harm anyone. Smoking, on the other hand, directly affects others. It's not about the extra financial cost of healthcare, that's taken care of with large taxes on cigarettes. It's about the fact that I breathe the same air you do. Smoking is pollution, and it's harmful to those around you.

I may look at some fat person shovelling in McDonalds and think and think worse of them, but I wouldn't go up to them and ask them to stop it. However smoke around me and I will. If you want to smoke in your own home, then that's your choice and your rules. Similarly open spaces are public property that are well ventilated, and so I have little problem.

Aside from that, there is a social stigma to being fat. People don't date you, seats on planes and cinemas feel too small and generally you walk around with it being obvious that you are fat.

Also, I want to add, even if smoking is better than eating 4000 calories a day, it's not good. That would just make it less bad. It's like a lynch mob saying "Hanging - at least it's not crucifiction". It doesn't make it ok.

Overeating being bad does not mean smoking isn't bad. They can both be bad to some degree, and we should discourage both in society.

If you lead a very active life, 4000 calories isn't bad. It is just those of us who sit on our asses all day that should try to stick near 2000.

For example, a 180 lb man who hikes for 8 hours with a 21-42 lb load will burn over 5000 calories in those 8 hours.

For really heavy days, 8000+ calories consumed isn't unreasonable.

Completely. One of my friends eats well over 5000 a day and still passes out through lack of blood sugar. She can't really eat any more, she spends a lot of time doing it anyway and doesn't really enjoy it. But she's a rower, so she doesn't have much choice.

Smoking is perfectly safe. I've smoked for 25 years, and never once did I burn my fingers.

Because your disgusting ****ing habit smells AWFUL and permeates EVERYWHERE. At least Obese people's food smells good.

Also, your smoking contributes to second-hand smoke which harms the health of others around you.

I'm one happy camper as both of "my cities" (Toronto and Calgary) are now 100% smoke free in public places (including bars/pubs)

Pretty much but not quite in Calgary. There were exemptions for the casinos and bingo halls for another year. Some pubs with video lottery machines are trying to fit under these exemptions.

Apparently the bylaw folks are NOT cracking down and only acting on a "complaint" basis. PLus a number of bars are headed to court about all this. The city council did a terrible job of implementing the ban as they changed the rules and exemptions far too much.

Personally I like the bans and I plan to signal my approval with my wallet by patronizing smoke free places more

The lardarses and lazy bones are doing a far better job of polluting the environment with their cars than smokers do.

When I was smoking I tried to avoid smoking around people who were non smokers in enclosed environments, its socialy responsible.
