  • Tech question: How do I remove something from the msconfig start up list?

I deleted a program, but the program is still showing up in the msconfig start up list... any ideas how to delete this worthless entry?

Try removing it from the registry entry shown in the msconfig startup list - usually ending in CurrentVersion/Run.

Download the Sysinternals tool pack. Microsoft bought them.

There is a small app called "autoruns.exe" in the package. It will let you turn off everything that starts up with your computer, through a simple interface.

        Delete the unwanted key from:
        HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg

Any key there without the "command" string will not show up in msconfig. So... another thing to keep clean, msconfig keys which just delete their command string but nothing else.

As Cort said, you may also have to delete the key from:
        HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
I don't know for sure. I don't have any unwanted keys there, but that might be because I delete them with CCleaner.
