I think this would be rare in say, city area. When you have people living in more isolated areas, they tend to be more helpful.

It's like Kitty Genovese thing all over again. You know, where someone is getting murdered, there's tons of people, and no one helps her, even when the danger is over. She's dying. Nothing happens. Why?

It can be said, that it's possible, the more people you have, the less likely it might be that someone helps someone in need. They focus on seeing the reaction of the other people, rather than stepping out fo tha tsituation and helping.

But sure, they could have not helped, considering the amount of people too.. you know, who knows the house might be wrecked when you have that many people. So it doesnt' take away from the hosts, that they did what they were supposed to do. Because many people don't do what they're suppsoed to do. They did, so it speaks in volumes.

Thats been studied to death, and apparently everyone thought that someone else already had called the police.

Ive lived in metro areas in the US all my life, and Ive found many people are quite helpful to others.

And it's been also studied it was sometimes a BS excuse. There's tons of other research that come up with the same result, even documentaries. sure, you can play a smartass and have crap as a replacement for your brain, but that's your choice, sir.

I find myself kind of agreeing with Mobius. Has the world come to an end?

I'm kind of like that with car accidents (though I've never been the first at the scene), but I always assume someone else called the police.

How small is the requirement for "small town" status?

Usually the town is small enough for everyone to know everybody. Practical limit is about 5000.

I guess I didn't grow up in a small town then. It sure felt like it though.

I grew up in New York City, Brooklyn to be specific. My family knew EVERY family in our building (about 60 families) and most of the other folks on our block. I could play outside when i was little without my parents coming out - there were ALWAYS people sitting in front of the building on lawn chairs, chatting - mainly elderly people, and mothers with baby carriages. They knew me, and kept an eye out. If anything, my parents complaint was the LACK of privacy - typically a small town complaint, IIUC.

This was in a city of 8 million.
