I graduate in the spring. I'm an aspiring author, and the rough draft of my first book is done, but I know better than to count on getting a publisher and getting it sold right away. What do I do to get myself off the ground?
Technical writing was recommended to me, on the grounds that it is in very high demand, needs a good writer who can learn quickly and communicate effectively, and can be done with only a BA. Looking at Wikipedia, however, it seems I'd need to know how to use a number of programs like PageMaker, and learn, well, technical stuff. I can't just write stereo and DVD player manuals and other easy crap like that; I may have to know programming languages or details of how computers work. I'm a quick learner, but not that quick. If there are any technical writers on here who can tell me otherwise, please do.
What else can I do in the way of writing for a living? I live out in the boonies, so I'll need a job that I can do much of over the 'net. I'm graduating with a 3.7something from Washington College, and I'll be a Philosophy minor.
