I had some hopes for the series. Can't say I'm impressed. The story and characters were somewhat sterotypical and the story seemed to evolve around reasons to show explicit sexual scenes. I'm not a prude, but I have no desire to jerk off to a historical drama-show.
I'd much prefer a re-run of "I, Cladius".Comment

Yes, you can't have it all I'm afraid. The merit of the series is that it conveys more or less the way of life in Rome in those times. The show is crammed with little details (a lot of which are -as far as we know at least- historically correct) that most people don't even notice. I suppose that they had to write a 'popular' storyline to keep people interested I'm afraid, and that in order to do that, some facts were ignored and others invented (like Octavian embarking on a trip to Gaul, etc).Originally posted by Kropotkin

There's different ways of viewing the series; women perceive programmes differently than men, so it's not that far-fetched to imagine no?

I saw most of season 1 (but not the last episode! argh!) but now I'm itching to watch season 2 and I still don't have HBO.
Downloading the whole first season was a pain in the ass, and I don't have enough room to house episodes even temporarily anymore..

I was actually surprised about those sex scenes too. I thought that's very uncommon for US tv series....but what do I know. Generally I think they fit well into the plot, but IMO they were a bit overdone in some episodes (not in the sense that they became more explicit, but IMO they simply took too much time away that could have been better used on other things - agree with Che here).Originally posted by Kropotkin

I mean it was well-made without doubt, and I enjoyed it, but what did they spend those 100mio for, since there were hardly any big battle scenes, and otherwise only some scenes seemed to need more effort (like the triumph of Caesar, camp of legio XIII, generally buildings in Rome).
I really enjoyed Rome once I could get the DVD box set and watch it back to back, the gladatorial part was really emotion and bloody, top notch.
Different rather than better than "I, Claudius", indeed "I, Claudius" will remain the more memorable for me, partly as I saw "I, Claudius" at such a young age and you don't forget the sight of Calligula with the blood from the baby he ate on his beard easily
