I though the classic old Polish Tradition was to be carved in two Between Russia and Germany?
Today, you are the waves of the Pacific, pushing ever eastward. You are the sequoias rising from the Sierra Nevada, defiant and enduring.

Turning the EU into a federation would, of course, drastically reduce the probability that neighbours will want to join.

Not that the apetite for federation among present members is notable. Maybe the French would swallow it - the Brits and Scandinavians would rather quit the EU altogether, and that attitude won't change anytime soon.

With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

I suppose the Swedes might stay if the European Federation adopted the Swedish system in toto.

True, Italian politicians, ex-royals and TV makers demanding sexual services from East European blondes are really a problem.

I won't say what I'd like to now, otherwise I'd get problems with moderators for the first time here.

In that case, isn't it rather silly that Sweden isn't in favour of a stronger EU with more social legislative powers? The more EU-wide social minima, the less unfair competition Sweden gets.

If you're a leftist country, you should be in favour of more EU, not less.

Swedes aren't particularly worried about "unfair" competition - witness the fact that unlike most of the EU 15, we didn't slap artificial restrictions on immigrant labor from the previous batch of new entrants. Swedes do fear meddling by Brussels.

I think you're overestimating Sweden's leftishness. Parts of our economico-political system would be perceived as insufferable liberalization in France or Germany.

I meant within the past 100 yrs or so, not all the way back in the pre-Napoleonic era.

Yeah, the hire and fire policy in scandinavia would certainly cause serious riots in those countries.
