The good of society must prevail over the good of the individual?
More like they are one and the same. Those that seperate the two tend to have blinders on which make them incapable of judging what the good of either actually is in the long run.
I kind of understand how they feel. Saddam tourture and murdered Iraqies everyday of his rule. When he was finally put to death I can see how they would rejoice, but I dont think it is right etheir to take pleasure in the death of anther person.
There moutains of proof that Saddam killed hunders of thousands of people in Iraq, it sounds like you are not convinced of his guilt. Not all killing is the same as murdering someone. It is not all the same.
Oh I'm entire aware of his crimes and convinced he approved those killings. The trial just wasent up to even the 20th century war crimes trial standards.

What possible value does his status as legal president of a sovereign country have if he's unelected?
An unelected position of authority has no moral standing whatsoever.
His death has absolutely the same value as the death of any other common criminal. The fact that he was enough of a vicious and cunning thug to murder and backstab his way to power over the entire country gives him no more additional value than the fact that someone manged to murder his neighbor would give to the murderer.
I absolutely cannot understand how anybody can respect the position of unelected leaders much less expect others to respect those leaders.
Personally I would have like to see the Iraqi President Mr. Hussein spending the rest of his life in some European prison like in Sweden after being given a fair trial at the Int. War Crimes Tribunal in the Hague. Instead of some US backed kangaroo court wielding winners justice on him. Did you ****ing heard the guards were dancing around his body chanting shia slogans....Jesus. Thats just unbelievable for us.
Murdering someone for the crimes he may have conducted is always a crime and will be judged as a crime by the future generations. Especially when a legal President of a Sovereign country is put to death like this without a free trial by the invaders.
A life in prison in Sweden should have been enough of a sentence for him.
I couldn't agree more. What is clear to me is that trial was revenge. This will not bring any good to the region.
Btw, Mr. Bush should be judged too.

Damn you Sadam
Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind- bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space.

what is so important about this public UK/US split I keep seeing people supporting?
If it's in hopes that in the future such a split would prevent Uk involvment in another fiasco like the invasion of Iraq please don't forget that no public UK/US split was necessary to prevent UK involvement in the Vietnam war. All this pining for some sort of falling out between the US and the UK seems entirely pointless.
I don't seek a US/UK split for the sake of it only if it makes some progress.
The US/UK split of Suez was good I aplaud the US for standing up to its then supposed biggest allies.

First, do you honestly think that any European country would have agreed to let him stay in their prison? Second, after the first couple of terrorist attacks on the European country keeping him in prison then what? Move him from country to country or ask the people of that country to continue to endure the attacks? Frankly it's the contemplation of the later, the inevitable retributions, which would have provided any European country with sane, competent leadership an adequate excuse to refuse to sponsor Mr Hussein's imprisonment.
One of the dilemmas resulting from Mr Hussein's capture and imprisonment was the human cost of keeping him. How many people died just in the process of finishing his trial? I'm including all the officers of the court, the lawyers, and the family members.

I would hate to have him as my neighbour, thank you. Bad idea! He´s Iraqs problem, let him rot in Abu Graib!

This is why the whole world despises you. Matters none to you today maybe. But it will matter you one day when the mushroom clouds light your way to the Wall Mart.
Thats when I pray for your poor soul.
Keep on fantasizing. Hope it helps you sleep at night.

Which split led directly to the 6 day war, the occupation of the West Bank, the current complexities in the Middle East. If thats your idea of progress, id hate to see your idea of decline.
