You bring up a very good question. You've shown pretty conclusively that losing as VP doesn't particularly get you anywhere near the Presidency. For some, it can be merely a bump on the road of a Congressional career (or perhaps it elevates their persona a bit in Congress) such as with Dole and Lieberman. But candidates choose VPs mainly for their geographical ties and their relative unoffensiveness. This second quality, while good in a VP candidate may (IMO anyway) indicate a lack of ideas or passion, because either of those may sway voters against a Prez because of who he has as VP and they try to avoid that.Originally posted by lord of the mark
has a losing VEEP candidate gone on to win the presidency ? since FDR, at any rate.

None of the GOP guys who ran from 32 to 38. Or Barkley, or Kevauver, or the other dem who ran with Stevenson in 52. Not Henry Cabot Lodge. Not William Miller. Not Ed Muskie, despite being front runner in 72. Not Sargent Shriver. Not Bob Dole, despite being nominated in '96. Not Geraldine Ferraro. Not Lloyd Bentsen. Not Jack Kemp. And not Joe Leiberman, despite also being front runner.

Just limiting it to losing VEEP candidates who actually ran for Prez - Lodge, Muskie, Dole, Leiberman. 3 never got the nomination, one got it and lost. Why do people still think a losing VP campaign is a stepping stone to anything?“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
 - John 13:34-35 (NRSV)
