    Korea is Divided (1945)

The division of Korea into North Korea and South Korea stems from the 1945 Allied victory in World War II, ending Japan's 35-year occupation of Korea. In a proposal opposed by nearly all Koreans, the United States and the Soviet Union agreed to temporarily occupy the country as a trusteeship with the zone of control demarcated along the 38th Parallel. The purpose of this trusteeship was to establish a Korean provisional government which would become "free and independent in due course."[1] Though elections were scheduled, the two superpowers backed different leaders and two states were effectively established, each of which claimed sovereignty over the whole Korean peninsula.

The Korean War (1950-1953) left the two Koreas separated by the DMZ, remaining technically at war through the Cold War to the present day. North Korea is a communist state, often described as Stalinist and isolationist. South Korea is a capitalist liberal democracy and one of the largest economies in the world.

Since the 1990s, with progressively liberal South Korean administrations, as well as the death of North Korean founder Kim Il-sung, the two sides have taken small, symbolic steps towards a possible Korean reunification.

Cyrano de Bergerac Premieres in Paris (1897)
Cyrano de Bergerac is an 1897 play written by Edmond Rostand based on the life of a real person of the same name, a soldier and poet with an unusually large nose. Cyrano is in love with the beautiful Roxane, but he is obliged to woo her on behalf of a more conventionally handsome, but less articulate, friend. The play is responsible for introducing the word "panache" into the English language.

Panache is also used to describe moose antlers. I wonder if it has anything to do with the nose...

          What?

THIS DAY IN HISTORY: from The Free Dictionary Wounded Knee Massacre (1890)

During the tension that ensued, a weapon discharged, US troops opened fire, and within minutes almost 200 men, women, and children were dead. THIS DAY IN HISTORY: from The Free Dictionary Edwin Hubble Announces Existence of Other Galaxies (1924)
Edwin Hubble worked as a basketball coach and teacher, served in World War I, and studied law before focusing his energies on astronomy. On December 30, 1924, he made a groundbreaking announcement, declaring that fuzzy "nebulae" seen earlier with less powerful telescopes were not part of our galaxy, but were actually galaxies, themselves. With the findings now known as Hubble's law, he was also the first to provide evidence to support what theory about the universe?

THIS DAY IN HISTORY: from The Free Dictionary Bruno Hauptmann Goes on Trial (1935)

In recent years, the case against Hauptmann has come under serious scrutiny due to the discovery that some of the evidence used to convict him was planted or doctored and that certain testimony was false. The tragedy inspired an element in what famous Agatha Christie novel?
