it wasn't really fireworks; it was a type of explosive, I don't know what they're called in English. Really large firecrackers, explosives basically
Sounds like an M-80 -- a black barrel-like device, about the size of a thumb.

Next largest (that I know of) is the cherry bomb, so called because it's red and about the size of a cherry.

That's because a deputy with a fire extinguisher was close at hand.

      Policemen with fire extinguishers.

That's the kind of world we need.

Policemen don't need firearms, they carry a fireextinguisher, for all the dumbasses.

Bigger than a thumb, much bigger. It's cylindrical and typically about 6 inches in length, 1-2 inches in diameter. Some of them have an explosive effect close to that of hand grenades. They're illegal of course, yet they're widely circulated in the lead-up to and during New Year's. Produces a tremendous blast. In Danish, they're called kanonslag (~cannon blasts).

Argh, now I've really got to find out what they're called.

Edit: My trusted dictionary says "maroon". Does that make any sense?

Why you thinking of setting yourself on fire soon, buddy?

You know, like even a molotov cocktail has sparklies of a sort. Well, it's fire dripping burning rag, but I think we can count it as a sparklie. I count it as a sparklie anyway.

Or was it a hand grenade? THAT doesn't count.
Not in and of itself. Maybe depending on the object being blown up, that might produce sparklies, but that's not the same.
Plus, IIRC, a Molotov Cocktail in addition to having an accelerant, usually has something akin to liquid soap mixed in its concoction, yes to confirm I did a Google search on what the history and makeup of a Molotov Cocktail is.

I have in my sorted past "observed" such device at a pretty close range..although where I came from they were known as a Wake-up Call

We learned how to make Molotov cocktails in the army, as an improvised anti-tank measure in the field. And yes, we mixed some powdered gel-like substance into the petrol, to make the burning fluid stick better to the target.

Aim just below the gun turret of the tank and you're in business, while the tank is not. At least that was the plan according to our instructors..

He could have gone the other way and taken some innocent people with him too, you know. That would be something, wouldn't it; murdering people and killing yourself at the same time...the horror...I sure wouldn't want to live in such a world, brrr.

Just what are the odds, that when your last resort to stopping the tanks, is to make improvised bombs (anti-tank ones at that), you're going to have a "gel like substance" at hand?!
or would something common as hair gel work too?

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - A man used flammable liquid to light himself on fire, apparently to protest a San Joaquin Valley school district's decision to change the names of winter and spring breaks to Christmas and Easter vacation.

whhaaa- bakersfield? no way man! or is that where all the hippies go when it gets rainy up here?
