  • Is the current generation the most literary ever?

I mean that in a slightly unconventional way because I know someone will come and make a comment about how stupid young people are or how they are not well read in the classics or some such stuff. Instead I'm talking about how much they write and how much they read. I contend that the current generation could very well be the best read and the most prolific writers in human history. Let me explain.

With the internet going main stream millions of kids have grown up frequenting web forums, flaming and debating over a vast array of topics, and even doing internet research to back up their points. I recall that the average kid now spends between 1-2 hours per day on the internet and they can't all just be looking at porn. This very fact adds up to lots and lots of little fingers clicking away on keyboards and reading ****loads of virtual drivel along with the occasional gem. These kids are spending 1-2 hours per day every day reading and writing. Sure, most of it isn't literary masterpieces but it most certainly is something. What do you think?

Can you summarize the OP for those who do not want to read the entire thing?

I've spent a little time on the forums frequented by early teens (like the Blizzard forums), and I've seen absolutely nothing worth being called a gem, or even something remotely close to thought-provoking insight.
I don't think most forums help young people progress any further than they'd do with a group of RL friends. And I'd actually think they progress less, because it doesn't help their literacy (teen fora and blog are appalling literacy-wise), and it seriously hampers their non-verbal communication.

            I agree.

BTW., if 1-2 hours a day on the computer makes kids literate, does that mean that I with 10-12 a day am Shakespeare?

No way. While the average teen in a Western country might read & write online a lot, look at the spelling. Forums like Apolyton, where people try to use proper grammar & spelling are rare. Most forums when the average of members is below 20 have people who use textspeak or leetspeak. Someone who types in proper English words not bothering with caps and punctuation is actually better than average.

                              Eventis > you

From what I've heard, reading comprehension among teens here has been falling in recent decades, chiefly due to immigration, but it's not a big change. I doubt the 'Net is much impact either way.
