I once read that the entire population of the planet could fit onto the Danish island of Bornholm which is about 500 square kilometres, in the Baltic Sea. As long as noone made any sudden movements, that is.

Only if you stack them very well.

Accordings to the size of the human atm (around 6 Billion) and the size of the island (500 million m^2) you would have to get 12 humans on a single m^2 (perhaps more as I assume that not every m^2 on the island is suitable for stacking humans)

With their space-efficient Ikea shelving units, you mean? That's how everyone will get on the island.

I think the napoleonic wars had much to do with france´s population growing so slowly in the XIX century, hundreds of thousands of young french men died, more than half a million if I recall correctly,

The population figure for Spain seemed too high, I thought it was more like 40 million than 44.4m. But that's probably what I get for previously referencing to the CIA factbook.

Germany didn't exist until the 19th century...

I just double checked the Spainish census, apparently population of Spain is a little over 40 million, the rest indeed being foreigners living there as Cort Haus alluded to. (Mostly Morrocans and Ecuadorians).

It did, but it was not united. That's a difference.
