  • Geek Canon

I found this off Snow Crash's wikipedia entry (mentioned in another thread) and I thought it was interesting: A canon for geekdom.

What do people think? I think it's missing a few SF books, as well as ASoIaF for fantasy. Required art topics should include Julia set fractals, maybe a knowledge of ASCII art. Music...dunno. Television is missing nBSG, maybe Mythbusters? RPGs...GURPS, maybe? Or Battletech? Computer games are definitely missing MoO and M.U.L.E.

What would you add or remove?

My qualifications, although I should add that although I've read the books, I don't read anything even remotely like them these days. But then your youth is the time to make these mistakes, right?

The X Files (seen it once)
                  Stargate SG-1 (again, once only)
Married with Children (er, only dubbed in French. )
I've also seen Star Trek a few times, in its various guises, and a lad I lived with at university used to love the one with Patrick Stewart in, so I've seen that quite a lot.

The book list must include Dune, and Stephen R. Donaldson's Triliogies of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever.

Hmm...probably should throw in stuff like Mythical Man-Hour and the Cathedral and the Bazaar, too, but that might be getting into geek subcultures rather than the renaissance geek.
