In Soviet Russia, a whole minute wonders what a Lewis University is doing in YOU!

Yeah. I read the Wikipedia entry on it.
Strangely enough, the mention of the words "POOR IMPULSE CONTROL" tattooed on his forehead was familiar.
I definitely never read the book, so I wonder where I heard about that from...12-17-10 Mohamed Bouazizi NEVER FORGET

I take it being made a 'Professor' in the USA is easier than in the UK?
We also have two "tracks" for professors. "Tenure track" who have salary from the University and who have rights to lab space and "Research Track" who must survive on grants and who must occupy lab space 'belonging' to a tenured or tenure track professor.
Nowadays, within the big biomedical research departments, one does a Ph.D. and 5-10 years as a post doctoral fellow. The key during that post-doc phase is to become 'attached' to a tenured professor so that one can become a research track assistant prof and thus become able to apply for outside grants. These days it's so competitive that most big depts wont even look at you for a tenure track appointment if you dont have at least one RO1 grant (in my line of work around $1M over 5 years) and are on the verge of securing a second grant or renewing the first RO1 (which is often the criteria for promotion to associate prof).
The short of it all is that it is as difficult these days in the US as it is in the UK. Personally, I've thrown in the towel. I'm tired of living grant to grant and I've got a reseach job in industry working on the same stuff but paying me twice as much, with more resources, and no worrys about some moron misunderstanding my grant applications (which would leave me with no income). We need seperate human-only games for MP/PBEM that dont include the over-simplifications required to have a good AI

Since very few students have class on Fridays( most classes are on Monday and Wednesday, Tuesday and Thursday, or Monday through Thursday. There are some classes that are just on Friday, and even less that are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.) Since there is hardly any students at school and the fact that if it is a public school they have cash problems they close a lot of stuff on Friday and leave early for the weekend.
All of these were large research institutions. Perhaps that's the difference.12-17-10 Mohamed Bouazizi NEVER FORGET

The confusion comes from that a Professor in the UK is the same as a Dept Chair here. We have Assistant Professors (no tenure) that have are roughly the same rank as Lecturers, Associate Professors (now have tenure) that are roughly the same rank as Senior Lecturers.
