Seriously though, I agree with this sentiment -- if someone said Happy Kwanzaa to me, I would take it as a greeting of goodwill. So I don't see why someone should be offended if I say Merry Christmas.

I can sort-of see why, if it's a presumption that that person celebrates Christmas.

But my point was about you taking issue with someone saying happy holidays. I wouldn't want to stop people saying Merry Christmas at all, but similarly I wouldn't want people to stop saying happy holidays if they prefer.

hell -- I'll say Happy Hanuka or Kwanza or whatever if I know a person's disposition but in reality Christmas has become a pretty secular holiday for man with all the commercial trappings but few of the religious ones.

To many people Merry Christmas is no more religious than Happy Labour Day

I have no problem with Happy Holidays -- I use it myself. I have problems with people who try to tell others how to express good will.

                You and I agree.

But if you think it's understandable why some people might be offended with the presumption that they celebrate Christmas in the religious, Christian way, I disagree. I would not be offended if someone said Happy Kwanzaa to me because I'm willing to bet that that person is not doing so because he presumes I celebrate it, but is expressing good will with the term he is most comfortable using.

Damn, you guys make this way too complicated. I should have written a thesis on holiday greeting etiquette.
