  • Is this a scam?

I just got this forwarded to my email from my sister, and from the looks of all the addresses, its been forwarded alot. It also has an attachment, but I haven't opened it, and I think I should do a virus/spyware scan after I post this:

    >Subject: PLEEEEEEASE REEEEEAD! IT WAS ON GOOD MORNING AMERICA TODAY SHOW

    >
    > Ladies and gentlemen,
    >
    >I hope that you do not find this as an inconvenience, but I think we
    >should all make a little extra off Mr. Gates if he is willing to give it
    >away. I hope that this works and everyone is able to forward this and
    >bank off the Beta program that is being run. Have a great day.
    >
    >THIS TOOK TWO PAGES OF THE TUESDAY USA TODAY - IT IS FOR REAL
    >
    >To all of my friends, I do not usually forward messages, But this is
    >from my friend Pearlas Sandborn and she really is an attorney.
    >
    >If she says that this will work - It will work. After all,What have you
    >got to lose?
    >
    >SORRY EVERYBODY.. JUST HAD TO TAKE THE CHANCE!!! I'm an attorney, And I
    >know the law. This thing is for real. Rest assured AOL and &nbs p; Intel
    >will follow through with their promises for fear of facing a
    >multimillion-dollar class action suit similar to the one filed by
    >PepsiCo against General Electric not too long ago.
    >
    >Dear Friends: Please do not take this for a junk letter.
    >Bill Gates sharing his fortune. If you ignore this, You will repent
    >later.
    >
    >Microsoft and AOL are now the largest Internet companies and in an
    >effort to make sure that Internet Explorer remains the most widely used
    >program, Microsoft and AOL are running an e-mail beta test.
    >
    >When you forward this e-mail to friends, Microsoft can and will track it
    >(If you are a Microsoft Windows user) For a two weeks time period.
    >
    >For every person that you forward this e-mail to, Microsoft will pay you
    >$245.00 For every person that you sent it to that forwards it on,
    >Microsoft will pay you $243.00 and for every third person that receives
    >it, You will be paid $241.00. Within two weeks, Microsoft will contact
    >you for your address and then send you a check.

    >Thought this was a scam myself, But two weeks after receiving this
    >e-mail and forwarding it on. Microsoft contacted me for my address and
    >within days, I received a check for $24, 800.00. You need to respond
    >before the beta testing is over. If anyone can affoard this, Bill gates
    >is the man.
    >
    >It's all marketing expense to him. Please forward this to as many people
    >as possible. You are bound to get at least $10, 000.00 We're not going
    >to help them out with their e-mail beta test without getting a little
    >something for our time. My brother's girlfriend got in on this a few
    >months ago. When I went to visit him for the Baylor/UT game, she showed
    >me her check. It was for the sum of $4,324.44 and was stamped "Paid In
    >Full".

I think its a scam, (why would Gates do this? What Tuesday was it on the "USA Today"? What date was this on "Good Morning America?) but I'd like the someone eles's opinion on it.

It's not a scam as such, since nobody makes money off of it. It's just a stupid waste of time, and it's been floating around online for years now. It's probably on Snopes or something, but I'm too lazy to look.

        I guess it is:

Is Bill Gates giving $5,000 to Facebook users who click a share link?

I'd like to say sorry to the site owners for wasting space, bandwitdh, etc.

Sort of a scam. It's more like an internet entity that has taken on a life of it's own (virus or worm, but it requires users to actively help it spread). Gates isn't giving money away.

It could be part of a social experiment. It has been circulating for a long time.

Good idea not opening the attachment.

In comparison to some of the other wasted space, bandwidth, etc. that goes on here, they need to pay you a compliment. This wasn't so bad.

A little simple math and common sense disproves it, really. The e-mail doesn't mention an upper limit on the number of testers allowed, and spreading in this fashion it would multiply exponentially. You only need to pass it on to four people to make a thousand bucks, plus you're getting bonuses for everyone they pass it on to, and they're getting a bonus for passing it on too...that would add up into millions of dollars spent pretty damned quickly, and he'd have no control over how much he'd end up spending. Gates could buy a thirty-second spot on the Superbowl and get a lot more market value than he would from a stupid beta test among a few thousand random people.

Also, with all payments being in nice round numbers, one wonders how that girl got $4,324.44. Especially considering she was "in it for months" and made less than half of the $10K the author guaranteed, and about a sixth as much as the author made in two weeks or so.

EDIT: Ha! Einstein doesn't agree. After posting, I got the quote, "Common sense is our name for all prejudices acquired by the age of eighteen," or something like that. So ol' Al might conceivably have done this beta?
