Today, you are the waves of the Pacific, pushing ever eastward. You are the sequoias rising from the Sierra Nevada, defiant and enduring.
Best at what? Head-to-head? Supressing insurgencies? Delivering firepower where it isn't planned for? Heaviest armor with some mobility? Easiest to operate, maintain, and build (within certain firepower perameters)? Most impressive on parade? Least visible to satellites while still effective? Best at augmenting infantry defenders without endangering friendly troops?
Each of those questions has a different answer in terms of models currently on duty around the world. All-around, the M1A2 fulfills several of those missions very well and has the capability to fire accurately at range while on the move. It's not very stealthy, however, probably due to the American expectation to control the air in any combat environment. Tanks-on-tanks, it is probably the best with a decently trained crew in each sides' tanks. However, it requires lots of training to operate and maintain properly, is not particularly easy to produce, and not particularly useful in insurgencies except in terms of protecting the crew while making a big mess.

The early Ausf. D had many mechanical problems, but the later A & G models were much better.
Is that a G?

Probably, it was captured in the Ardennes offensive apparently. AFAIK, the Ausf. D only participated on the Eastern Front (improved models just made it to the battle of Kursk)

Bah, modern tanks aren´t sexy. Now the Panzerkampfwagen Mk V, commonly known as the Panther V, there´s one hell of a sexy tank.
that thing is about as sexy as a Sherman.
The panther was an amazing tank exclusively by practical considerations.
It isn´t the looks that makes it sexy It´s that it could take out a Sherman at 1090 yards and a T-34 at 840!! And that is with the standard 75 mm gun. The Jagdpanther had an even more awesome 88 mm gun!
Not sure what you mean by "the standard 75mm gun" - it was always the same, wasn't it (not including TDs). However, the Panther's 75 was longer than the Mk IV's 75, therefore much better.
I think the Panther looks better than its predecessors, which are quite boxy.
