I could be persuaded against CP with the argument that she did not forfeit her right to life, but she did forfeit her right to live, even in prison, a non-socially productive life. Having committed a profoundly destructive act, she is now obligated to do something productive, for the common good, with her time behind bars. Anything from clinical drug trials to the most boring and/or grueling, but necessary, menial work that can be trusted to prisoners, to something actually decent like recording books for the blind (serial killer Ed Kemper did this for a while); if she chooses not to be productive and constructive, throw her in solitary.

And always give them some way to commit suicide. If we can't execute them, give them the option of executing themselves.

You need to get that up by a factor of at least 20 if you actually want to deter anybody.

The death penalty as currently used in Texas is a joke when viewed from a deterrence standpoint.

Murderers are far more likely to die of natural causes, accident or by themselves being murdered than they are of being executed by the state.

What sort of deterrent is that?

I would think that murderers, while in the process of murdering their murderees, aren't thinking clearly enough to be able to be deterred by promises of future execution.

Capital punishment is simply revenge.
