Learn to overcome the crass demands of flesh and bone, for they warp the matrix through which we perceive the world. Extend your awareness outward, beyond the self of body, to embrace the self of group and the self of humanity. The goals of the group and the greater race are transcendant, and to embrace them is to acheive enlightenment.

i was never really that into computers and technology when i was a kid, loved my bmx and football too much.
i was a total indie kid until 1999, my summer of love, i was 15. me and mates used to buy ****ty old cars, drive to illegal raves and parties, get ****ed off our faces, listening to trance, house and drum 'n' bass, partying with some crazy and very cool people. after a while most of my friends grew out of all that sort of thing, or more accurately, moved on when some other music became 'cool', but for me it became an obsession. i started digging deeper into electronic music, detroit techno, the early trance stuff, weird industrial music, i loved it all. one of the reasons i went to uni in swansea was because it had one of the premier trance clubs in the UK, i still live just down the road from it.
i still keep in touch with the scene, saw london elektricity the other week, i'm 22 and i've seen almost every dj i ever wanted to see at least once, how cool is that? i occasionally go out to car boot sales and stuff to look for tunes, picked up donna summer - i feel love and deacon blue - your town (perfecto remix) vinyls for £3 recently. i get a real thrill out of finding stuff like this, my friends say i should be a dj, i might give it a go if the whole law thing doesn't work out.
some people get it, some people don't. i was driving with some people in my car the other day, had a trance mix from 1994 on the stereo, that was real music, songs that were really long, really drawn out, really repetitive, proper hypnotic stuff. after this incredible musical journey had finished someone pipes up 'it all sounds the same dunnit', they didn't get it. cheers for the thread pekka for reminding me i'm not the only one who does."The Christian way has not been tried and found wanting, it has been found to be hard and left untried" - GK Chesterton.

Cort Haus, man.. I thought you were my age? You must be at least 10 years older... maybe in your 40s... well, that's even cooler!
but you know what really gives me great vibes? It's not hacking these new computers, I mean damn, I don't even know how the hardware works these days. The old stuff is still fun to use, I still have my Amiga 500.. so every now and then I take it out and go into 30 hour mode of just playing with that.
Traianvs, couldn't tell you right now, but that video is definitely available in many places. I think it's awesome how the guys build scream tracker and make those tracks themselves, that's the spirit I like.
About the future, I'm not really into the new hardware, msotly because I'm not updated with the knowledge. But AI is definitely one of the things that is still interesting and going forward... all the way from the late 50s in MIT to this day, I must admit the development is awesome, exciting and who knows what it brings us in the _near_ future.
My current paradigm is a bit worrying though. I'm not into this whole new surveillance society thingie. The modern panopticon is not getting my vote, plus the paradigm for me is that we are entering a new era. The old era was, that information (in databases) were trying to model you as a person. Collecting info. THe info on database was supposed to be as rich in information as possible.
So, the databases are kind of modeling you. Now, there's a shift. Now, you are starting to model the databases, that is, if we have entered 'definitive' data of you, then you are that person. That is, the virtual you has more relevance than you yourself. For example what the state has on you, you go and try to refute that data.. you most likely don't have the right to know what they have on you even. Most likely there are some mistakes, the data is always static, it is fragmented, taken from various sources... then there's flags set by some people to categorize things, so who knows how well those works..... so what is really happening now is that you are in the mercy of that virtual you, and you have no idea what virtual you is, but it overrides you.
That is worrying to me and what worries me the most is that people do not care about this issue. So we will end up with this thing at the end.
Sorry, what babbling! Just came out from the bar so I'm a bit drunk. In da butt.

It hasn't yet become reality, but I do believe we are in the change mode, and that we are going to witness this UNLESS there is grass roots activity around this issue and we can tackle this issue.. this technology is supposed to SERVE us, not control us.
For example, I'm in a research now that uses .. metholodogies that are used in the manner of... we are pulling out data that has to do with behaviour, and we're building data models of that, and basically categorizing activities (and thus people). Umm, we do think that part is highly unethical and something we do not want to see, but the point is, as businesses and governments collect data, use data from all kinds of sources.. that info is BOUND to be fragmented, static and outright wrong. This is happening right now.
A situation where you get into trouble because of that would be the scenario where I say we live in it.
Just wait until they feed the databases of terror suspects some more.. or the pre-crime unit just announced, though it was denied to be a pre-crime unit. But the idea is the same, so if we accept it in principal level, that is when we do that, the new paradigm will come.
That is, the information for example about you will be more reliable than you yourself. Example, your security clearance is about 0 for some reason, be it faulty information. Challenge that information and you'll see you can't do anything about it, yet it affects you, for example you won't be able to get many jobs..In da butt.
