My view is that people should leave the daughter the f*** alone. IF and when she seeks public office her lifestyle probably should be open to debate. Until then, I put all this under "crap that's nobody's business"
Now if Dick gets pregnant, I thionk that would be worth talking about

You're joking, right? The fact that grandaddy Cheney and grandmommy Cheney have to walk the tightrope of accepting their daughter, her spouse, and future grandchild while remaining part of the same political party that caters to the extreme religious right is worthy of discussion.
There's hope in that when such Republicans as Cheney have to personally face the issues concerning gays and lesbians firsthand, from within their families, that we can begin to see a broader, social, positive change for gays and lesbians.
A lot of Republicans are not racist, but a lot of racists are Republican.

...because we all know people choose their political parties based on one issue alone.
Not only is there a Republican VP whose daughter is gay, but I heard from a friend of mine there are also some *gasp* gay Republicans! I also read there are apparently a number of people who consistently vote Democrat despite also being against gay marriage! WTF is up with that?

I think that that is some of the issue though. There is a large part of the Christian community, that while the Democrat party is much more Christian freindly on most issues, votes republicans because of abortion and homosexuality.
And I must admit, in the past I would have voted Republican if I thought that they would actually do positive change in that issue (I think that defining human life to exist when brain waves exist in a human brain is the correct definition). In fact, I did vote for some Republicans in 2000 (I didn't know they would be so terrible, I am sorry, I did vote straight democrat in 2004 though).

In a larger sense people who are conservative on social issues should realize that by the time an issue is to the level of a Democrat-Republican wedge issue its realy way too late. The republican party being the "traditional family values party" is perpetualy fighting a futile delaying action against the changes in our society. Within a generation or two they have lost every battle if by no other reason then the fact that old people die and the young growup with more liberal views. This all stems from a view that society was "perfect" when they were growing up and should never change. Not suprizingly they also belive the perfect code of human morality was layed down 2000 years ago. The fundamental belif of all conservatives is "change is bad". Now ask yourselves of Orwels three tiers of society the High, the Middle and the Low which wants to retain its place and which want to change their place. The High ofcorse wish to remain the High and the Middle and Low wish to see change (though not the same change). Thus is should come as no suprise that when one votes for pro-life or for a gay-marrige ban what your realy voting for is War in Iraq, the destruction of the middleclass and all the other ills the Republicans have brought us and it can not be any other way because the fundamental value system of thouse put into power is that of the High which is in perpetual war against the rest of society to maintain the structure of society.

Companions the creator seeks, not corpses, not herds and believers. Fellow creators, the creator seeks - those who write new values on new tablets. Companions the creator seeks, and fellow harvesters; for everything about him is ripe for the harvest. - Thus spoke Zarathustra, Fredrick Nietzsche
In some ways, younger people today are a bit more social conservative then their parents.
It is on gay rights that young people are very liberal compared to their parents.

The republicans don't really want to make any changes on the social issues. If they do, they will lose many of their Christian voters (not people like Ben, who have bought in on the idea that democrats are evil incarnate).

(I would just like to say again that I support gay marriage, as I support two people forming a life long commitment)
