illegal downloading and file sharing will kill the record industry--as
we know it--but it will not kill music. if an artist is really really
passionate and still wants to make music just to make music regardless
of financial benefits, he can still do so in a world of illegal
downloading. he may not make millions but he can make music like a
painter still can paint a masterpiece or a writer can still write. out
of love, out of passion, out of devotion. we can have great music by
great artists.
but, film is a very expensive medium. unless you can make megabucks
off mooies, no studio is gonna invest in filmmaking. so, in the long
run, illegal downloading of movies will not only destroy the movie
industry but movie itself. even indie films are very expensive to make.
even as we are going from film to digicam, in order to make film you
need actors, all sorts of equipment, permits, sets, art design,
costume, lodging, etc, etc. unless there is monetary reward, there
aint gonna be no point of making a mooie.
of course, home movies will grow everywhere. but that aint cinema.
coppola and lucas have said with digicams, the masterpieces of the
future will be made by just about everyone--as if cinema is only about
owning cameras. it's true that digicams are so affordable while film
and related equipments are prohibitively expensive. but, there is more
to filmmaking than toying with a cammy. even if you have a digicam,
you have to pay for whole bunch of other stuff--actors, costume, sound
people, electricity, etc, etc. which are expensive. i mean even if
coppola had used digicam instead of film camera in making the
godfather, it would have been a very expensive movie. just the
location scouting and shooting and sets and stuff were very expensive.
