Military is only representative of the community at-large.
No better and no worse people than anyone.
Given that simple fact, there are also people out to abuse the system, and get what they can for as little involvement as they can. Meaning, there are fakes and frauds.

I don't know about the specific instance in the OP, so I don't want to make any comments about that.

However, soldiers in Iraq *are* getting shafted by the military's mental health policies. My brother among them. Soldiers that clearly have serious mental health disorders, whether PTSD, or simply the usual set (Bipolar/Manic, Borderline Personality Disorder, ADHD, etc.) are given little to no treatment and are generally laughed at, not as much by their fellow soldiers as by their officers and NCOs.

I'm not talking about people who come in and say they're mentally ill. Many people who are seriously mentally ill won't admit it freely, after all. I'm talking about people who have severe, obvious symptoms. Self mutilation, severe insomnia, numerous other symptoms that go ignored or undiagnosed.

Do you want to tell me that an Army that's paying attention to the mental health of its soldiers could manage to miss a soldier cutting himself over a hundred times on the wrists and ankles? And once it was reported (by his fellow mates) take several months to do anything about it? Oh, and of course try to get out of its monetary responsibilities to the soldier afterwards.

The army doesn't give a $%#@ about its soldiers. I don't think it's a political issue, except that the politicians as a group are doing a lousy job of controlling the military on both sides of the road.

Additionally, people can cope. Your brother can cope. Tell him to go the Veteran's Affairs. They're well-aware of it.

It's nothing new. Took my brother almost 18 years to get his discharge status changed so he could get full benefits and disability.

There is absolutely nothing more important to me than the well being of my sailors. And their spouses. And their children.

That means I go to court with them for custody/traffic/debt or whatever else. I go to the hospital when their kid is sick. I sit and listen to them when their having a bad day or life is giving them the shaft. I spend far more time talking to their banks getting their credit improved or filling our their home loan paperwork than doing my assigned job.

So take this "NCOs and Officers" don't give a **** crap and shove it, it is nothing more than you trying to apply your personal politics to a system you don't understand. The simple fact is that while we have to take care of our people, the job also has to get done, which is why we just discharged a young Ensign for cutting herself because you can't do this job if you are not all there.

Every system that exists gets abused. Should we abolish the human race because of it? Some people set fires for insurance fraud. Let's get rid fire departments and insurance. Some people commit crimes, let's get rid of police and prisons. Etc. and so on.

This is a complete BS argument on your part, Sloww, and a retreat from a real discussion about how your fellow vets are being ****ed over by the very system they have risked their lives to defend. The military begins shafting them when they destroy the person's individuality and train them to murder. Why should we expect the military to care about them after they've served their function?
